Simple Way to Reupholster Patio Furniture

Subjected to the harsh elements outside, your patio furniture sustains more wear and tear than any furniture you keep indoors. Damage from weather, wildlife or even just heavy use can make your old seat cushions look faded and worn, but that doesn't mean you have to buy a new set of patio chairs. Instead, a simple reupholstery job can make your patio furniture look and feel like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seat cushion from your patio chair.

    • 2

Find the seam on the cushion where the edges meet and carefully peel them apart. If the cushion is held together with stapels or pins, pull them out with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 3

Unroll your new upholstery fabric and lay it flat. Choose a thick, durable fabric that will withstand heavy use outdoors.

    • 4

Lay the fabric you removed from the cushion over your new fabric. Cut out a section of new fabric in this size and shape.

    • 5

Assess the cushion itself -- if the cotton batting inside seems worn or ragged, replace it with new batting. You may either glue it to the base of the cushion (usually a small plank of wood or plastic) or simply wrap the fabric around it to hold it in place.

    • 6

Lay your new fabric cutting flat on the floor, face down. Center the cushion over the fabric and set it down.

    • 7

Pull one side of the fabric over the cushion as tightly as you can, then staple it in place with a staple gun. Staple several times to evenly distribute pressure and prevent the fabric from tearing.

    • 8

Repeat with the other three sides. As you go, fold the corners in as you would when wrapping a present, stapling them to the base.

    • 9

Place the cushion back on the chair's frame.
