• Metal outdoor furniture is usually constructed of steel or aluminum. Steel offers greater strength than aluminum, but rusts easily. Aluminum is the better choice for moist, humid environments. Metal furniture lasts for years and can be easily repaired with help from a local welding shop. The surface color of metal tables and chair is generally painted on or powder coated. The powder coating provides a thicker, more uniform coat. Metal chairs can be uncomfortable, however, and require the use of cushions.

Plastic Tables & Chairs

• The versatility of plastic makes it possible to find an endless variety of styles of outdoor furniture. PVC pipe and sling furniture is inexpensive and easy to clean. Plastic outdoor tables and chairs are also easy to carry indoors for the winter months. This type of plastic furniture is not durable, however, and does not support heavy weight well. Plastic resins offer sturdier options. Plastic resins can be made to look like wicker, which lasts much longer and retains its color longer than natural wicker furniture.

• Wicker tables and chairs give an outdoor area an old-fashioned, relaxed look, inviting guests to sit back and enjoy a long chat. Wicker does not stand up well to the elements, however, and must be brought inside during the winter months. Clean wicker with soap and water. Though it is lightweight and easy to move, it does not bear hard use or heavy weight well. Repairs require a skilled craftsman. Some wicker outdoor furniture sets have wicker worked over a strong, steel frame, which can last for many years.
