How to Build a Long Park Bench

Long park benches are are around eight feet in length. They are made out of treated lumber and built to withstand abuse for many years. Treated lumber is preferred because this type of wood can withstand exposure to rain, sunlight and snow for many years. It has the same standard dimensions as construction lumber and is just about as easy to work with. The only difference besides the treatment of this lumber is that it tends to be a little heavier than dry construction lumber.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 16-inch boards flat, parallel and 17 inches apart. Lay a 24-inch board perpendicularly on top of them so the top edge of the 24-inch board is flush with the ends of the 16-inch boards. The ends of the 24-inch board should be flush with the sides of the 16-inch boards. Screw the 24-inch board to the 16-inch board so three screws enter each 16-inch board. Repeat this step with the other two 16-inch boards and 24-inch board.

    • 2

Stand the two pairs of 16-inch boards upright so the 24-inch boards are not on the ground. Position them so the 24-inch boards are parallel, between the 16-inch boards and spaced 53 inches apart. These are the legs to your park bench.

Lay the 96-inch boards perpendicularly on top of the 24-inch boards. Space the boards 1/2-inch apart. The outside edges of the two 96-inch boards should be flush with the ends of the 24-inch boards. The ends of the 96-inch boards should each be 20 inches away from the 24-inch boards. Screw the 96-inch boards to the 24-inch boards using four screws for each board.
