How to Clean a Southern Freedom Butterfly Umbrella

The Southern Patio company was founded in 1979 by Ken Harbaugh. Originally a supplier of wood garden edging, the company expanded to produce swingsets. The company opened offices in China to manage outsourcing operations and it was there that the Butterfly Offset Umbrella was designed. The umbrella was distributed through a big-box retailer, ending up in many backyards nationwide (see references 1.) The Southern Freedom Butterfly umbrella has a water-resistant canopy that can be cleaned with mild detergent (see references 2.)

Instructions

    • 1

Position the umbrella in a shady location to prevent soap from drying on the canopy during cleaning. Open the umbrella fully.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of mild detergent into a bucket and fill with cool water. Dip a soft-bristle scrubbing brush into the water and gently scrub the surface of the canopy, using a ladder to reach as necessary.

    • 3

Continue scrubbing the canopy until the entire surface has been cleaned. Discard the detergent water and mix a new batch as needed if the water becomes excessively soiled.

    • 4

Turn the nozzle of the hose to the "Spray" setting and rinse the canopy thoroughly until the water runs clear. Allow the canopy to dry completely before closing the umbrella.
