Woodworking Plans for Different Types of Outside Chairs

Creating an outdoor living space is becoming an increasingly popular way to essentially add another room or addition to your home. One of the keys to designing a functional outdoor space is choosing the right type of seating. There are many types of outdoor seating from which to choose, especially when it comes to chairs. You can select anything from a basic lawn chair to a lounging chaise --- whatever works for your personal style.
  1. Style

    • There are many styles of outdoor chairs from which to choose. When considering the style that would be best for your outdoor space, think about the purpose you want it to serve. For example, a chaise or an Adirondack style chair might be best if you are looking for something comfortable and relaxing. Or perhaps a simple folding chair would be best around a backyard bonfire or as an easy portable option if you plan to use the chair in different ways and locations.

    Design

    • Once you have chosen the style of outdoor chair you want to make, it is important to narrow down the design of your chairs. For example, even the most basic lawn chair can have many different designs: with or without arms, folding or stationary, and so on. Just as the style of chair you choose should reflect your own personal taste, so, too, the design should fit your sense of style and needs.

    Materials

    • When building your own outdoor wood furniture, consider the types of wood you want to use. Keep in mind durability, ease of use, flexibility, if needed, for your design, and the overall look and feel of the wood you choose. Consider also using different types of wood within the same chair, or adding other materials to your design for an extra unique touch.

    Skill Level

    • If you have opted to build your own outdoor chair, the most important thing to keep in mind is your own skill level. Some styles of outdoor chairs are easier to build yourself than others. You might think a luxurious lounging chaise would be perfect for your patio or poolside, for example, but can you build it? Don't be afraid to attempt a woodworking chair pattern if it fits the style you want, just take the time to be sure you can complete the project, or ask for help if you can't.
