Instructions to Macrame a Patio Chair

You can refurbish an old patio chair with an uncomplicated macramé technique that will add secure support to chair seats and backs. Choosing the right cording is essential since the patio chair is subject to sunlight and rain, which can weaken synthetic fibers. Stick to a natural jute roping that can be found at hardware stores. The jute is sturdy but rough, so bathing suit wearers may want to add a cushion over the jute.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 600 yards jute roping on a spool
  • Patio chair

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out a piece of the roping that is four times the length of the patio chair side seat support rail.

    • 2

Hold the measured piece of roping parallel to the support rail at the front corner of the rail. Guide the spool of roping around the opposite support chair support rail, and then bring the spool of rope back to the starting point.

    • 3

Tie a square knot with the long, free end of the rope and the spooled rope. Make a square knot by passing the free end of rope under the spooled rope. Tighten and pass the spooled rope under the free rope.

    • 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3, creating a neat series of square macramé knots along one edge of the chair seat frame and keeping the rope lengths as close to each other as possible. Cut and knot the end of the rope.

    • 5

Repeat steps 1 through 4 to macramé the patio chair back.
