DIY: Porch Benches

Outdoor porch benches can be pricey when purchased from home and garden suppliers. Making your own bench from a recycled inner tube and lumber is a cost-efficient incorporation of both functionality and charm for any garden space, not to mention the porch. Sturdy and weather resistant, this bench requires few supplies and little previous woodworking experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two 12-inch pieces from the 2-inch lumber. These are the short sides for the bench. Cut two more pieces from the 2-inch lumber that measure 18 inches each. These are the long sides for the bench.

    • 2

Create a rectangle using the four pieces of lumber cut in the previous step and a carpenter's square. The short pieces go on the inside of the long pieces. Secure the rectangle using wood screws at each corner.

    • 3

Cut four more pieces of the 2-by-2-inch lumber, each measuring 18 inches. These are the legs for the bench.

    • 4

Attach the legs at each inside corner of the rectangle, using wood screws. Make sure the tops of the legs are flush with the sides of the rectangle.

    • 5

Cut two supports of 1-by-4-inch lumber, each 18 inches long. Attach one of the supports across two of the legs, halfway up the leg, using wood screws. Repeat on the opposite side.

    • 6

Cut two short supports from 1-by-4 inch lumber, each measuring 12-inches long. Secure these supports halfway up the legs on the short sides of the bench using wood screws.

    • 7

Use scissors to cut long, 2 inch-wide strips of the inner tube for the seat.

    • 8

Clean the strips of rubber with hot soapy water. This will remove any grime left on the rubber.

    • 9

Stretch one strip of the inner tube from one side of the rectangle to the other. Pull the strip until it is extremely tight, then staple in place on both sides. Cut of the extra rubber to use for another strip. Repeat across the entire bench without overlapping strips.

    • 10

Weave a strip of inner tube in the opposite direction through the other strips. Pull the strip tight, and staple in place. Repeat across the bench, keeping each strip as close as possible to the previous woven strip.
