How to Make Wicker Furniture Weather Resistant

Wicker, whether constructed from woven rattan or paper fibers, is a popular, lightweight material used to weave chairs, tables and stools. Although some wicker pieces are designed specifically for outdoor use, bare wicker is not water- and weather-proof. It can be damaged by moisture and can, because of its natural materials, be susceptible to molds and mildews. Paint -- or, to maintain a natural look, clear shellac -- allows wicker to withstand more weather, although neither painting nor shellac makes the piece weather-proof – just more weather-resistant. Always bring your wicker furniture inside or cover when not in use to protect them.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread out several sheets of old newspaper beneath your wicker piece to protect your work area.

    • 2

Clean your wicker piece using a sponge and a few dashes of gentle hand soap. Wipe clean, then rinse away any soap with a clean sponge. Allow the wicker to completely dry.

    • 3

Apply a coat of oil-based primer to the clean wicker using the natural bristle paint brush. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for application and drying time.

    • 4

Clean the brush well if applying shellac.

    • 5

Shake the spray paint or shellac can well for one minute to thoroughly mix.

    • 6

Apply the spray paint to the wicker piece, holding the can 10 to 12 inches from the surface and moving your hand slowly to produce even coverage. Allow the paint to dry, apply a second coat, and then allow that coat to dry before using. To shellac, apply a thin coat of shellac over the piece using the paint brush and allow to dry before adding a second coat.
