How to Fix a Creaky Rocking Chair

A rocking chair is a household item commonly found on a front porch or in a baby’s nursery. Rocking chairs have been used in homes for centuries as a place to relax, reflect and meditate. A creaky chair can interrupt a relaxing time to sit back and, if used to put a baby to sleep, can cause her to wake up when the chair is rocked or moved. There are different reasons that a rocking chair might creak, and several solutions to stop it or reduce how loud the creak is.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen and determine where the creak is coming from. Check all of the rocking chair’s joints to see if there are any bolts, screws or other parts that may have come loose and are causing the creaking.

    • 2

Adjust all loose items as necessary using a screwdriver, wrench or mallet. Re-glue any wood joints with carpenter’s glue if necessary to stop the creaking.

    • 3

Wash down a wood rocking chair with an oil soap or rub down joints with talcum powder. Spray the joints of a metal rocking chair with a metal lubricant or cooking spray. Beeswax can also be rubbed over the joints of either a metal or wood rocking chair.

Use a humidifier in your home and place it near the rocking chair. Sometime wood can dry out over time and create a creaking sound when it gets too dry.
