How to Make a Hammock Seat

You can make a sturdy hammock seat from heavy-duty canvas purchased from the hardware store and commonly used for painters' drop cloths. The hammock seat is designed to hang from eye-hooks that are securely attached to a porch ceiling stud or deck overhang with anchors, and the seat requires no framework other than the eye-hooks. When finished, the hammock seat will provide the perfect site for relaxing outdoors with a glass of iced tea and a good book.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard heavy-duty canvas
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Grommet maker

  • 6 yards 6 mm braided nylon cord

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the canvas into a 36-inch square with the scissors. Fold over the edges 1 inch twice to the wrong side and pin them. Sew a straight stitch in the middle of the folded material with the sewing machine.

    • 2

Make grommets at each corner of the hemmed canvas, 2 inches from each side edge, using the grommet maker.

    • 3

Screw in the four eye hooks to the ceiling joists of the porch or deck, using the secure anchors, positioning them 24 inches apart in each direction to correspond with the four corners of the seat.

    • 4

Cut the roping into four equal pieces with the scissors.

    • 5

Thread the roping through the eye hooks and the corresponding grommet holes, bringing the ends of each rope length together and tying the ends in a secure double knot at the appropriate height for the height of the ceiling porch or deck; the seat should be 24 inches from the floor. Cut the excess rope from the cords.
