Can I Apply High Gloss Varnish to Outdoor Tables?

Wood patio furniture takes a beating from sunlight, water, wind and abrasion. Over time, it can become cracked, splintered or rotted without proper care. Seal wood furniture with a sealer or varnish. A high gloss varnish has an appealing appearance but does have some drawbacks in an outdoor setting.
  1. Types

    • Varnish comes in several formulas, all of which have potential benefits and drawbacks. Traditional varnishes are made from natural resins or oils, such as linseed oil, and can darken the wood slightly over time. Polyurethane is a synthetic varnish that offers excellent protection, is easy to apply and doesn't yellow wood. Water-based varnishes are easy to clean up, but they can yellow with time, depending on the product. High gloss options are available in all types of varnish.

    Considerations

    • Varnishes come in high gloss, gloss and matte finishes, and all of the finishes are equally durable. A high gloss finish creates a shiny, new appearance when applied to wood furniture, but it shows scratches and wear more readily than a matte finish, an important consideration for outdoor furniture.

    Selection

    • Apply a protective coating of varnish annually, or as needed, to keep furniture looking new. Select a product labeled for outdoor use, though, because indoor products don't offer protection from the sun and water. Clean the furniture thoroughly and strip any old sealer if necessary. Apply high gloss varnish with a clean, new brush. Do not wipe the brush edge against the can, but tap it gently. Brush the varnish on in smooth, steady strokes, following the grain. Brush another coat on top of the first, going against the grain. Allow the varnish to dry overnight and sand it lightly. Wipe the furniture to remove dust and apply a second coat.

    Materials

    • The type of varnish you use depends in part on the style and material of the furniture. Redwood or teak furniture is naturally rot-resistant and looks best with a matte finish, rather than a high gloss varnish. Maintain it with a penetrating oil or sealer, based on the manufacturer's directions. Clean all outdoor wood furniture at least annually with a scrub brush and gentle soap. Cover it or store it indoors during the winter to prolong its life.
