How to Make a Portable Hammock

If you know the basics of how to crochet, you make a comfortable hammock that can be attached to a pair of trees in any location. Using sturdy hemp twine, available at hardware stores, to crochet the hammock will make it durable. Strong metal rings and anchored hooks make installing the portable hammock in any site desired uncomplicated. A shady spot under two sturdy oak trees makes a great hammock location.

  • Crochet hook size H
  • 5 pounds of 12-ply hemp twine
  • Tape measure
  • Two round metal rings, 3-inch diameter

Instructions

      Crochet 36 inches of chain stitches that is 36 inches long, using an H-size crochet hook and hemp twine. Insert the hook in the third chain and single crochet. Single crochet in each chain stitch.

      Chain three, and turn the piece of work to the opposite side. Single crochet in the top loop of each previous single crochet stitch. Repeat this row until the hammock is 7 feet long. Knot and cut the twine.

      Cut a 24-inch-long piece of hemp twine with scissors. Tie one end of the length to the first chain stitch of the first row of the crocheted piece with a secure double knot. Repeat, tying 24-inch-long lengths of twine to each chain stitch in the row. Tie the opposite ends of the lengths to one metal ring.

      Tie 24-inch-long lengths of twine to the top loop of each single crochet stitch on the opposite edge of the hammock. Tie the opposite ends to the remaining metal ring.

      Insert the two hooks with anchors in the porch ceiling or in two trees positioned 6 1/2-feet apart. Hook the metal rings in the hooks to hang the portable hammock.
