PVC Vs. Resin Furniture

Patio furniture made from plastics is a popular option due to its ease of maintenance and affordability. Two forms of plastic commonly used for patio furniture are PVC and resin. Both are easily molded into just about any shape, and as such, they can mimic other substances such as wood or wrought iron.
  1. PVC

    • PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. Products constructed of PVC include items such as plumbing pipe, house siding and carpeting, as well as patio furniture. PVC wicker furniture is made from woven strands of synthetic material that mimics natural wicker, which is woven from strands of reed or grass. Furniture made from PVC will last a long time, is easy to clean, and is inexpensive, whereas true wicker is much more expensive and degrades easily. PVC furniture is also usually coated with UV-resistant chemicals to prevent fading. Choose higher quality PVC pieces, which will resist heat damage; lower quality pieces may soften and even become misshapen in the hot sun.

    Resin

    • Synthetic resin is an artificial substance similar to plant resin; it starts out as a liquid but permanently hardens as it sets, making it suitable for molding into various furniture styles. Resin patio furniture is also affordable. It can be molded to mimic furniture such as Adirondack chairs, lounge chairs and tables. Resin furniture is usually stackable, making for efficient storage during the off-season. Choose the thickest and heaviest options for sturdier furniture that will last longer. Avoid white pieces, which tend to stain if exposed to rain. Resin is water-resistant and will not attract mold or mildew. In the hot sun, resin furniture is usually cool to the touch, unlike PVC.

    Maintenance

    • To help your PVC or resin furniture last, clean and cover them during the winter; store them in the garage or basement rather than leave them outdoors to gather dirt. While they will not attract mold, dirt will find its way into the tiny crevices featured in some styles – especially those that mimic wood – and it will take a bit more effort to remove the dirt once the warm weather arrives. In most cases, however, you will need only water and a mild soap to clean both types of furniture. Avoid using abrasive or harsh cleansers, as they can harm the glazed finish. For further protection, apply a resin patio furniture wax a few times during the season.

    Environmental Factors

    • Plastics of all kinds can emit toxic gases. Because they are derived from petroleum or natural gas, they consume nonrenewable energy resources in their production, and it takes many centuries for them to degrade. On the plus side, plastics are lightweight, durable, versatile and cheap.
