Instructions

    • 1

Measure out and cut four legs from 1-by-4-inch lumber measuring 22 1/2-inches long. Use a circular saw to cut the boards. Cut two arm rests from 1-by-4-inch lumber measuring 27 inches long. Place two of the legs on a flat surface across from each other. Place an armrest over the tops of the boards. The armrest should overhang the right leg by 1-inch. Screw the armrest to the legs using two 2-inch wood screws on each side. This is the side of the chair, so repeat to make a second side.

    • 2

Set the two sides up with the armrests on top and 19 1/2-inches apart from each other. Cut another 1-by-4-inch board to measure 27 1/2-inches long. Position this board across the backs of the sides, directly under the armrest overhang. This is the back support piece. Screw the board to the sides with 2-inch wood screws.

    • 3

Cut two boards to measure 24 3/4-inches long, and three boards to measure 22-inches long. Position the two long boards and two of the short boards to form a rectangle with the long boards over the ends of the short boards. Screw the square together with two wood screws at each corner. Place the third, short board inside of the square as a support. Position it so that it reaches across both long boards and screw in place. This is the seat frame for the chair.

    • 4

Slide the seat frame in between the legs of the chair, halfway up the legs. Screw the frame to the legs using two 2-inch wood screws at each meeting location. Cut five slats from 1-by-4-inch lumber measuring 20-inches long. Arrange them across the seat frame leaving a 1/2-inch gap between each one. Screw the seat slats in place with one screw at each end.

    • 5

Cut five more slats for the back of the chair measuring 20-inches long. Place these slats on a working surface parallel to each other and 1/2-inch apart. Cut two 1-by-4-inch boards to measure 19 1/2-inches long for supports. Place one board across the top of the slats and one across the bottom. Screw the supports to each slat using wood screws. This is the back of the chair.

    • 6

Slide the back of the chair into place in front of the back support piece. Screw the back to the back support piece and the back of the seat using one screw at each meeting location.

    • 7

Sand the chair thoroughly with 120-grit sandpaper. Rub a piece of fine-grade steel wool over the chair surface. Use a tacky cloth to wipe away any loose particles. Fill all screw holes with wood filler. Coat the chair using wood primer and allow it to dry. Paint the chair in a desired color and allow it to dry completely.
