Purchase an oil-based paint that is marked “outdoor” for your wicker furniture. Sometimes called enamel paint, oil-based paint supplies a tougher, more durable finish than acrylic (sometimes referred to as latex) or water-based paint. Oil-based paint can yellow a bit with time, but this is the price you pay for the resilient finish, which is a snap to clean with a wet cloth or a mixture of white vinegar and water.
Purchase an oil-based wood primer, which will drastically affect the result of how your wicker furniture looks after it’s painted. Primer coats the original surface and supplies a medium for the paint to adhere to.
Buy oil-based paint and the primer in spray form. Applying paint with a brush allows you to coat spindles, handles, nooks and crannies, but using spray paint will provide better coverage, not to mention takes less time.
Gently remove any flaked or chipped pieces of paint with a wire brush or scraper, being careful not to create any gouges or scrapes in the wicker. Cover deep cracks with wood filler, then sand very lightly until smooth.
Wipe the furniture with a damp cloth, making sure it is devoid of all dirt and debris.
Secure a large cardboard box, such as an appliance or furniture box, to use as a spray booth. Set it up outdoors and place your furniture in the direction that any wind is blowing to prevent any paint from flying back in your face.
Apply two coats of the oil-based primer, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly. The primer will provide a better paint medium and allow you to change the furniture’s color from dark to light.
Spray on the colored paint, keeping the can at least 12 inches from the furniture. Spray a light, even coat by keeping your hand moving from left to right (or right to left) to prevent globs from forming and paint drips from running down the furniture. Inspect the furniture carefully for any spots you may have missed, especially around corners and spindles and underneath armrests.
Let the paint dry and then apply another coat.
Allow the paint to cure for one week before sitting in and enjoying your restored wicker furniture.
