How to Make a Swing Awning

Relaxing in your metal swing on a side porch or patio may come to a sudden halt if the sun comes glaring out from behind a cloud at just the right time of day. You can build your own awning over the swing to prevent the blinding rays of the sun from bearing down on you. The awning can protect your skin from harmful UV light, as well as bird droppings or errant balls from neighboring yards.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect two 42-by-1/2-inch PVC pipes to a 72-by-1/2-inch PVC pipe with two PVC elbow fittings. Connect the open ends of the two 42-inch pipes to another 72-by-1/2-inch PVC pipe with two more PVC elbow fittings.

    • 2

Attach one end of four 12-inch metal bars to both top sides of the swing, one on each pole, with 1/4-inch screws and a cordless drill. Adjust the bars to face up and out at 45-degree angles. Tighten the screws so the bars do not move.

    • 3

Screw the metal bars, at the 45-degree angles, into the PVC rectangle so the rectangle is centered over the swing with 1/4-inch screws and the drill.

    • 4

Lay a 77-by-45-inch canvas on the floor flat with the bottom side, or wrong side, of the canvas face-up.

    • 5

Mark the 77-inch edges of the canvas with a piece of chalk, 3 inches in from the edges.

    • 6

Draw a 40-inch line parallel with both of the 77-inch edges with the chalk onto the canvas.

    • 7

Sew one lengthwise edge of a 40-by-3 inch strip of canvas to the lines drawn on the canvas with heavy-duty thread and a sewing machine. Sew the other lengthwise edge of the strips 1-1/2 inches from the line toward the center of the canvas. These pockets will hold the swing awning frame bars that connect in the middle of the pockets.

Cut the corners of the canvas diagonally from the corners 2 1/3-inches in toward the center of the canvas with a utility knife. These cuts will allow the canvas edges to lay like fringe along the edge of the swing awning frame.
