DIY Sun Lounge

Relaxing on your backyard sun lounge with a cold beverage makes summer so refreshing, but patio furniture can be expensive. If you crave sun time but have a tight budget, DIY your way to funky furniture that helps you relax outdoors. Using low-cost recycled pallets helps keep this project cheap. If you need multiple lounges, adjust the amounts of material as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain three wooden pallets in good condition. You may be able to find free pallets at hardware stores or other large stores near you. Try to find two pallets that are rectangular and about the same size, and one pallet that is slightly larger.

    • 2

Stack the two rectangular pallets on top of one another. These serve as the sun lounge seat. The weight of the wood keeps the seat steady.

    • 3

Use a pry bar and hammer to take apart the back of the largest pallet, pulling up the nails and then removing the boards. This pallet will serve as the backrest of the sun lounge, and does not need the second layer of boards.

    • 4

Nail one two-by-four to the side of the backrest, which will attach the backrest to the lounge seat, using two or three nails. You may be able to use some of the wood pulled off the pallet you used for the backrest.

    • 5

Attach another two-by-four to the other side of the backrest, in the same manner.

    • 6

Hold the backrest up to the base of the sun lounge so the two-by-fours touch the bottom of the base. Angle the backrest vertically upward or downward until you find the right angle for it. If possible, have a friend help you with this so you can stand back and watch. Once the backrest is angled in position, use a level and pencil to mark its two sides at a 90-degree angle with the ground.

    • 7

Attach one two-by-four to each side of the backrest by nailing it to the inside edge of the pallet. To angle the backrest properly, do this at the 90-degree marks you just made. This ensures that the backrest sits at the right place.

    • 8

Attach the backrest to the base using two large screws, one for each side. Drive a screw through the bottom seat pallet.

    • 9

Step back and check over your work. The lounge should be fully assembled and free-standing.

    • 10

Sand rough edges using 200-grit sandpaper. Work over the front and back of the sun lounge to remove any rough edges.
