How to Make Your Own Cube Ottoman

Stand up four of your square boards to form a box. Nail each together, spacing your nails every 4 inches.

Place a fifth square board over the box and nail into the sides of the boxes to attach. Set the nails 4 inches apart. When attaching this base board, do not nail it into the corners, or you may have difficulty adding your casters.

Predrill holes in the corners of the top square. Screw in your casters, turning fully to tighten them to the ottoman. Turn the ottoman over to leave an open cube.

Sand the entire surface, inside and out, to smooth away splinters and round any edges. Apply wood stain or paint the ottoman, if desired. If choosing to paint, pick a color that coordinates with your fabric choice for best results.

Create a square shape with the four 1-inch boards over the last 16-by-16-inch square. Center the small square 2 inches in from the edges. Nail the boards to the square using finishing nails. This forms a lip for your lid to stay on the ottoman when it is moved around.

Set your fabric square on the ground or a table with the right side of the fabric facing down. Place the foam square over the fabric. Center it as best you can. Place the lid piece, with the 1-inch board pieces facing up, over the foam. Center it.

Wrap your fabric around the foam and pull it up to the square board. Use the staple gun to secure the fabric to the board one side at a time. Take care folding the corners, and use extra staples if necessary to secure them to the board. Keep the fabric smooth, with a consistent amount of tension. Flip the top over when you're finished stapling the fabric, and set it over the ottoman.
