How to Make and Build Paper Furniture

Create an unusual conversation piece for your living room by making furniture out of paper. Discarded newspapers and magazines are readily available, often for free. By collecting one or two armloads of paper you will have the basic ingredient necessary to build a solid, round ottoman or table base.

Things You'll Need

  • Unused newspaper or magazines
  • Transparent tape
  • 3-inch-long screws
  • Power screwdriver
  • Strapping tensioner and strapping

Instructions

    • 1

Roll your newspaper evenly and tight so that it forms a quarter-size-diameter cylinder. Tape it together with three pieces of transparent tape. Make a dozen or so cylinders before shaping your furniture.

    • 2

Gather five or six cylinders together into a circle shape. Make sure all of the cylinders are even in height.

    • 3

Drop your strapping loop over the gathered papers down to 3 inches off the floor. Pull the tensioner so that the strap becomes tight and cut the strap. Add a second strap 3 inches from the top of the gathered papers.

    • 4

Place one paper cylinder against the furniture group and screw a 3-inch screw 1 inch above the strapping through the new cylinder into the group. Add a second paper cylinder and screw on the opposite side. Add screws below the bottom straps. Fill in the space between the screwed-in papers with more cylinders packed tight. Double strap again.

    • 5

Add six or more cylinders to each row and add screws at different locations on each row. Build out the furniture piece until your last row. Do not add screws on your last row. Carefully face your papers in the direction you desire and strap. Add a third center strap if you like the look.
