How to Build an Ottoman for Free

Ottomans serve multiple functions: foot rest, seating and makeshift end table, to name a few. However, because ottomans are so useful and valuable, they are often priced accordingly. If you don’t have any money, or even if you are just trying to spend less, you can have your own DIY ottoman by the end of this afternoon, by using various materials most people already have on hand.

Things You'll Need

  • Milk crate
  • Chair cushion
  • Four shoe laces
  • Needle and matching thread

Instructions

    • 1

Sew the center of each of your shoe laces to the underside of your chair cushion, at four separate points close to each corner.

    • 2

Set the crate directly on top of the still turned-over cushion; the crate’s open side should be facing upward.

    • 3

Tie the shoe laces to the crate, going around edges of the plastic holes in the crate. Tuck in the remaining ends of the laces under the cushion. Turn the ottoman over when you’ve completed the tie process; it’s ready to use.
