Definition of Hassock

The hassock, closely related to the ottoman, is a small, upholstered piece of furniture that may be the most versatile piece in the living room. Usually shorter, smaller and more compact than the ottoman, the modern hassock has evolved to be much more than a footstool.
  1. Uses

    • Traditionally, the hassock has been used as a footrest, usually in front of an occasional chair, but modern design has put the hassock to work as an end table, coffee table, fireside seat and even a storage box.

    Variation

    • Hassocks can be shorter or taller than footrest height, and although traditionally round, hassocks can be cubes, rectangular or even irregularly shaped. Today, many hassocks are also storage boxes with removable tops.

    Upholstery

    • Hassocks were originally upholstered in leather for durability, but today they can be covered in any material. Microfiber, corduroy and suede are popular, and special slipcovers are popular in houses with small children or pets.
