How to Install a New Cover on an Ottoman

The covering on a well-used ottoman may wear out before the structure. When this happens, there is no need to throw out this piece of furniture. Make a cover to install over the ottoman to hide the unsightly fabric underneath and bring new life to the room. The cover is a simple sewing project that requires only basic skills. You may find yourself making several, so you can interchange the cover as it gets dirty, or your mood changes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the ottoman starting at the floor on the short end, up and over the top to the floor on the opposite side. Repeat this on the long side to determine the length measurement. A square ottoman has the same measurement for the width and length. Increase both measurements by 1 inch for the hem.

    • 2

Cut a square or rectangle piece of fabric using the width and length measurements. Stick a rolled piece of masking or painter's tape in the middle of the ottoman and place the cut fabric over top so it drapes evenly on all sides. Press the fabric onto the tape to hold it in place.

    • 3

Pull one corner point outward so it is flush with the top of the ottoman. Avoid pulling the fabric to prevent an uneven cover. Pin the two sides of fabric together down the edge of the ottoman so the excess fabric is in the shape of a triangle. Repeat this process on each corner to fit the cover.

    • 4

Remove the cover from the ottoman and sew along each of the pinned edges. Remove the pins and pull the cover over the ottoman to verify it fits properly. Adjust the corner seams, if needed.

    • 5

Remove the cover and cut off the excess fabric on each edge so there is a 1/2-inch seam salvage. Finish the seam edge with a serger or zig-zag stitch to limit fraying.

    • 6

Hem the bottom edge by turning the fabric 1/4 inch to the wrong side. Iron or pin the edge to hold it in place. Turn under another 1/2 inch to create a clean hem. Iron or pin the hem to hold in place for sewing.

    • 7

Sew the hem close to the inside turn with a straight stitch. Pull the cover over the ottoman.
