How to Cover Your Storage Ottoman

There are two options when it comes to covering your storage ottoman: sew a slipcover to drape over the of it top or upholster the cover with a foam pad. The option you choose depends on your personal preference and if a covering already exists. A slipcover has the benefit of being low maintenance, but it does not allow quick access into the ottoman. Both cover options are simple projects that require a few supplies and basic fabric skills.

Instructions

  1. Slipcover

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the ottoman, starting at the floor, over the top and ending on the floor at the opposite side. Add 1 inch to the measurements and write the number on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Cut a piece of fabric using the adjusted measurements. Tape the fabric on the ottoman so the right side faces down and the fabric drapes evenly on each site.

    • 3

Lift one corner of the fabric so it is even with the top of the ottoman. Pin the two sides of fabric together to create a seam next to the edge of the ottoman. The excess fabric should be a triangle shape. Repeat this process on all the corners.

    • 4

Remove the fabric from the ottoman and sew along the pin markings with a sewing machine and coordinating thread. Fit the cover on the ottoman and adjust the seams, if needed. Cut the excess fabric off about 1/2 inch from the sewing line.

    • 5

Hem the bottom edge by turning the fabric 1/4 inch to the wrong side and press with an iron to hold in place. Turn the edge under another 1/2 inch and press to hold in place. Sew the hem close to the inside fold.

    Upholstered Cover

    • 6

Unscrew the wood cover from the top of the ottoman and remove the hinge bracket with a screwdriver, if applicable. Measure the length and width of the cover and add 6 inches to each measurement. Write the actual and adjusted measurements on a piece of paper.

    • 7

Cut a piece of decorator fabric using the adjusted measurements. Cut a piece of 1-inch-thick foam batting to the actual measurements.

    • 8

Lay the piece of decorator fabric with the right side down on a flat surface and center the foam batting on top. Set the top of the ottoman cover on top of the batting so the inside of the cover faces up.

    • 9

Grab the center of the fabric on one side and pull it over the ottoman cover. Secure the fabric with a staple. Repeat this step on all four sides to secure the center of the fabric. Secure the rest of the fabric edges one side at time, leaving the corners to the end.

    • 10

Secure the fabric on each corner by folding the fabric to one side, stapling it in place and then repeating on the opposite side of the corner. Cut excess fabric around the staples, and secure the cover back onto the ottoman with the hinge unit and screws.
