How to Use an Ottoman as a Chaise

Many couches and sofas on the market today offer special accessories such as massagers, recliners and even chaise lounges. A chaise is a great place to stretch out with a book or to take a nap without climbing into bed or even leaving your den or living room. Even though you may not be in the market for a new sofa, you might wish your couch had a chaise. If you have an ottoman, especially a storage ottoman with a removable top, you can use it to create not just a chaise lounge on one end of your sofa but a chaise lounge that looks custom-made.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the ottoman against the couch. Line up the outer edge of the ottoman with the outer edge of the couch on one end or the other. Align the back edge of the ottoman with the front edge of the couch seat.

    • 2

Measure the combined length of the couch seat and the top of the ottoman. Be sure to lift the back cushion of the sofa to expose the whole seat. Add two inches to this length for seam allowances if you are sewing a cushion.

    • 3

Create or purchase a box cushion that matches or coordinates with the fabric of your sofa. Remove the existing sofa seat cushion; also remove the top of the ottoman if the ottoman is higher than the couch seat. Slide the new box cushion into place so that it covers the sofa seat and the ottoman top to create a chaise.
