How to Make Ruffled Ottoman Slipcovers

Sew a ruffled ottoman slipcover to hide an unsightly ottoman or change the look of your room. Ruffled slipcovers have a flowing bottom that you can pull up to access storage in or underneath the ottoman. The project requires moderate sewing skills and takes less than an hour to transform the look of your ottoman. You may want to sew two covers so you have an extra cover to put on the ottoman on wash day.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the width and length for the top of the ottoman. Add 1 inch to each measurement for 1/2-inch seams and write down the number.

    • 2

Determine the height from the floor to the top and increase the value by 1 inch for 1/2-inch seams and write down the number.

    • 3

Determine the circumference around the ottoman using a flexible measuring tape to get an accurate measurement. Multiply the measurement by 1.5 for a moderately ruffled skirt or multiply by 2 for a full ruffled skirt. Write down the number on a piece of paper.

    • 4

Cut the fabric pieces for the ottoman using the measurements in Step 1 for the top piece of fabric and the measurements in Step 2 and Step 3 for the ruffled skirt. Sew multiple pieces of fabric together with 1/2-inch seams to get the correct size for the ruffled skirt, if needed. Sew a zigzag or serger edge along the raw edge of the seam to reduce fraying.

    • 5

Pin the right sides of the skirt piece together along the short ends to make a loop. Sew the loop together with a 1/2-inch seam and finish it with a zigzag or serger stitch.

    • 6

Increase the stitch length on your sewing machine to the longest setting and sew along the top edge of the skirt loop about 1/2 inch from the edge and cut the threads so there is at least 4 inches hanging off the stitching. Sew a second row about 1/4 inch from the top edge, leaving long threads.

    • 7

Gather the skirt by pulling one thread from each row of stitching while pushing the fabric along the stitching. Use caution so you do not break the thread while gathering the skirt. Gather the skirt until the top edge is the same circumference as the ottoman.

    • 8

Pin the skirt to the top fabric for the ottoman cover, matching the right sides together. Sew the piece together with a 1/2-inch seam and finish the edges with a zigzag or serger stitch.

    • 9

Fold the bottom edge of the skirt 1/4 inch to the backside and iron to hold. Fold the fabric another 1/4 inch and iron to hold. Sew the hem along the first fold.
