How to Build a Lightweight Ottoman

A lightweight ottoman can be attractive and modern. Weight is kept down by making the ottoman smaller in size and by using lighter plywood over medium density fiberboard. There is a trade off in how sturdy a stool will be if the materials become too flimsy, so it's a good idea to consider the function of the stool, particularly if it will be used as a seat, when buying the materials. A small amount of extra weight can make a big difference in stability.

Instructions

    • 1

Place 1/2-inch plywood on your work table. Have the home improvement store cut your plywood to size from small pieces sold for this purpose. It will keep you from hauling home a large sheet you don't need.

    • 2

Position four furniture leg brackets one inch from each corner. Screw the brackets to the plywood with screws and a screwdriver. Turn the plywood face up.

    • 3

Spray the plywood with spray adhesive or foam. Position foam over the plywood and press firmly into place. Allow the adhesive to dry for 30 minutes. Cut around the perimeter of the foam using an electric carving knife.

    • 4

Place quilt batting on the work table. Turn the ottoman foam side down. Center the foam over the batting. Pull the top center of the batting to the back underside of the plywood and staple with a staple gun. Pull the bottom center and staple. Pull the left and then the right sides and staple. Continue following this stapling pattern, moving away from the center toward the corners.

    • 5

Fold the last of the batting at the corners so that the corners are tidy and staple. Trim off the excess batting. Place decorator fabric face side down on the work table. Center the batting side of the ottoman face down on the fabric. Staple using the same technique you used for the batting. Finish by screwing the legs into the leg brackets.
