Ottoman Cover Ideas

An ottoman is an adaptable piece of furniture. Not only can you put your feet on it, but ottomans serve as a seat or even a small table for playing board games. But, because people like to put their feet and food on them, they often get stained. To protect ottomans, put a cover over them.
  1. Use a Throw

    • If you use throws on the back of your couch or chair, get an extra one to cover the ottoman. Whether the throw is a solid color, patterned or a scene, using the same throw on all the major pieces of furniture will pull the pieces together as a group. If the throw is too large, you can either fold it so it fits nicer or even cut a piece to fit the ottoman and then trim it in a matching color and material.

    Throw Rugs

    • You put your feet on the ottoman so use a clean throw rug, an item well-adapted to handling feet and shoes, to cover the ottoman. You can get a throw rug in several sizes; pick the size that is slightly larger than the top of the ottoman so it drapes a few inches over the edge to protect the sides from shoes and feet. If all else fails, you can bind the edges of a piece of leftover carpeting to cover the top of the ottoman.

    Make a Fitted Cover

    • It's easy to make your own fitted cover from a durable fabric such as furniture fabric or corduroy. Simply lay the material over the ottoman with the right side facing the ottoman and pin each corner so the cover fits closely but not tightly over the ottoman. Sew along those pinned lines, cut off the spare material and hem around the bottom and you will have a fitted ottoman cover. Make several so that when one gets dirty you can throw it in the wash and put a clean cover on.

    Knit a Cover

    • Make a knitted cover by using alternating knit and pearl rows. Knit the first rows the width of the wide side of the ottoman. Occasionally, check your knitted piece by draping it over the ottoman. Knit two squares the size of the short ends of the ottoman and tie them onto the larger knitted piece to create covers for both sides. Tie all the corners together to finish your ottoman cover.
