How to Button an Ottoman

Make your plain ottoman look more updated by adding one or more buttons to the top of the ottoman. This technique allows you to keep an ottoman that's still in good shape with color that matches your décor. Most ottomans have a small amount of extra fabric on the underside of the furniture, allowing you to harvest matching fabric for your button. If you can’t find enough fabric, select a décor fabric that works well with the colors in your room.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the ottoman upside down or turn the lid upside down. Use pliers and a screwdriver to remove fabric covering the underside of the ottoman or lid. Be careful not to damage the fabric.

    • 2

Look for extra fabric that matches the ottoman. You need approximately a 1 1/2-inch square
to cover a 3/4-inch button. Harvest this if possible, using scissors.

    • 3

Measure the lid and find the center point. Drill a 1/8-inch hole at the center point.

    • 4

Place your harvested or new fabric over the top piece of a two-part covered button. Press the fabric into the teeth of the underside. Press the bottom piece of the covered button into the top piece until the two pieces snap together.

    • 5

Thread your long upholstery needle with heavy-duty thread. Tie the ends to a plain flat 4-hole button. Press the needle straight through the drilled hole and out through the center top of the ottoman. Pull the anchoring button snug. Slide the needle through the stem hole of the covered button.

Press your needle back through the same drilled hole and through a hole in the anchor button. Pull the covered button snug so that it creates a tuft at the top of the ottoman. Sew several similar stitches back and forth between the two buttons to create a secure attachment. Tie the thread off to one of the buttons. Replace your fabric cover.
