How to Make a Covering for a Stool With a Mitered Corner

As trends change through the years, your home decor style changes. Instead of replacing the stools in your home when you are ready to change your room’s style, recover them. Recovering an existing stool is less expensive than purchasing a new one and allows you to customize the fabric to match your decorating style. Even without much sewing experience, you can create a stool cover in an afternoon. Add mitered corners to the cover to streamline its appearance.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric
  • Fabric scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the top of the stool. Add 18 inches to each measurement then cut your fabric to size.

    • 2

Place the fabric face-down on a work surface. Fold the bottom edge of the fabric up 1 inch. Press the folded fabric with an iron. Unfold it then fold the bottom edge of the fabric down 1 inch and press it with the iron. Unfold it then fold the left and right edges of the fabric inward 1 inch, press the folds with then iron then unfold them.

    • 3

Fold all four edges of the fabric in toward the center of the fabric 1/4-inch. Press the folded edges with the iron. Sew along the edges with a sewing machine in a straight stitch.

    • 4

Fold all four edges of the fabric inward along the pressed lines. At each corner where the two edges of fabric meet, place two straight pins perpendicular to one another. Unfold the fabric so that the pins are along the edges of the fabric to indicate where the edges meet.

    • 5

Fold the top right corner on a diagonal. Fold the fabric under, instead of over as you have in previous steps, with the right sides of the fabric touching one another. As you do this, bring the two straight pins together so they touch. Draw a line with a marker from the straight pins to the corner made by the 1-inch pressed fold.

    • 6

Remove the straight pins. Sew along the drawn line in a straight stitch. Sew through both pieces of fabric to secure them together in a mitered corner.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 with the other three corners. Fold the fabric outward, draw a line on the diagonal, remove the straight pins and sew along the line.

    • 8

Turn the fabric right side out. Slip the cover over the stool. If desired, tie a 1-inch-wide piece of ribbon around the base of the seat and the cover for a decorative touch.
