How to Take Upholstery Tacks out of Wood

There are very specific tools and methods that are used to upholster a piece of furniture. For example, the fabric that the upholstered furniture is covered with needs to be attached to the wooden areas using either staples or tacks. Staples can be a bit more difficult to remove because they can become embedded in the wood surface. However, removing upholstery tacks from the furniture wood is a simple process that will take only minutes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate all of the upholstery tacks on the wood furniture. These are likely located anywhere that the fabric is attached to the wood, such as along the sides and on the back.

    • 2

Slip the edge of your needle-nose pliers underneath the first tack on one end of the wood. This should loosen the tack, but don't force it or you risk damaging the wood.

    • 3

Use something slimmer, such as the blade of a utility knife, if you cannot get the needle-nose pliers under the tack.

    • 4

Pop the tack off the wood using the needle-nose pliers.

    • 5

Remove all remaining tacks using whichever of the two methods that worked best for you.
