How to Make a Red Birch Cabinet Stain

Red birch, also called river birch, is a deciduous tree that produces strong, reddish brown wood used in furniture, cabinets, toys and craft items. Red birch cabinets, like many other wood cabinets, can benefit from a wood stain to deepen its natural color and enhance its beauty. If you can't find a wood stain that adequately complements your birch cabinets, you can make your own with artists' oil paints and several painting mediums available at art and hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix four parts linseed oil, four parts turpentine and one part drier in a glass or metal container.

    • 2

Squeeze two parts raw sienna paint, two parts burnt sienna paint and two parts burnt umber onto an artists' palette. For a lighter tone, use more raw sienna and less of the other two colors. For a darker tone, use more burnt umber and less of the other colors. Mix the paints together and make a note of the proportions you used.

    • 3

Add 1 tbsp. of the paint mixture to 1 cup of the solvent mixture and stir together to make a stain. For a thinner stain, add more of the solvent mix.

    • 4

Test a small amount of the stain on a hidden spot of the cabinet and tweak your paint colors if necessary before staining the entire cabinet.
