How to Decorate Boring Furniture

Decorate boring furniture to fit in with your exciting interior design personality. All it takes to turn a hand-me-down piece into an heirloom treasure is a little existing DIY skill, a few tools and some time to pay attention to the details. Hiding furniture with slipcovers and tablecloths is always an option, but not necessary with a small amount of handyman knowledge and a desire to create your own designer looks.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand any shiny finishes or peeling paint off the furniture. Fill in any undesired flaws, such as holes or deep scratches with wood filler according to the manufacturer's instructions. As products vary from brand to brand, pay close attention to application specifics and drying times.

    • 2

Paint the dresser to match the rest of the decor in the space. Paint designs or patterns using stencils or freehand if you are comfortable doing so. For example, paint flowers around the knobs and ivy along the molding to fit into a garden themed room.

    • 3

Add removable decals to furniture in a room that has a design that may change in the near future. For example, princess decals are easier to take off a pink dresser when your daughter wants a more grown up space, rather than having to repaint the entire thing. Replace them with black Fleur de Lys decals for an instant Paris feel.

    • 4

Replace old boring drawer knobs and door pulls with new ones. This small touch makes a big impact on a piece of furniture, so take the time to choose ones that fit in with the rest of your decorating scheme. For example, use crystal knobs in an elegant setting or flower shaped ceramic knobs for a shabby chic look.

Reupholster tired and worn furniture if you have the know-how and skill set to do so. An easier option is to spray it with upholstery paint. Available in many colors, it is applied in the same fashion as spray paint to solid surfaces.

Add decorative nailheads to furniture pieces for extra drama and visual interest. Using single spiked nailheads gives you more control over the pattern, color, finish and size of the completed look. Create designs such as flower patterns or geometric symbols on upholstered pieces and on solid surface furniture such as cabinets and chests.

Place decorative pillows and throws on couches, chairs and other upholstered furniture or wooden seating pieces. Add scarves, doilies and other fabric elements to add texture and more color. Liven up boring furniture with your personal accessories such as an antique silver framed picture of your grandmother placed on top of her now revamped bureau.
