How to Prime Furniture With Kilz

Kilz is a paint and primer manufacturer that produces primers for any number of painting jobs, including exterior and masonry surfaces. Priming a piece of furniture before painting it allows the paint to cover the old surface more smoothly and effectively. Primer also provides an extra layer of protection against water damage or staining. Priming furniture with Kilz is a simple project that is similar to painting. Use an interior Kilz primer for interior furniture and an exterior Kilz primer for patio furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape any old, chipping paint off the piece of furniture with a paint scraper. Sand the surface of the piece with 220 grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges.

    • 2

Wipe the furniture with tack cloth to remove dust, then wipe it with a damp sponge. Let the piece air dry.

    • 3

Stir the can of primer with a paint stirrer. Pour the primer into a paint tray.

    • 4

Apply the primer with a paint roller or paintbrush, if the piece has hard-to-reach parts. Apply the primer in smooth, even, overlapping strokes that follow the wood grain. Let the primer dry for one hour before painting.
