Decorating Ideas for a Tall, Narrow Niche With Shelves

Tall and narrow niches are shelving and storage units that are built into walls. Often niches store books, media systems and practical items that may be used on a daily basis. However, tall and narrow niches may not have much space available, so choose decorations for the niche wisely.
  1. Souvenirs From Trips

    • Personalize your wall niche by adding souvenirs from family trips around the world. Place small statues and figurines on the niche's shelves to showcase where the family has traveled. Guests may find the niche decorations to be conversation starters. If the niche has several shelves, place souvenirs from one city or country on separate shelves to add organization and order.

    Media Storage

    • Larger wall niches are designed to store media units, such as stereos, televisions and DVD players. Tall and narrow niches with shelves can be used to store DVDs and CDs used with your large media system in your living room or media room. The niche then takes on a practical and functional use as primary storage for your favorite films and music.

    Collections

    • If you want the wall niche to stand out as a focal point, decorate it with collections of vases, candle holders or bowls, for example. Three vases in three different shades of green, for instance, is a collection and can draw the focus to the niche, depending on the existing color palette you have in the room. Choose colors that stand out to make it the focal point of the room. Avoid white or plain items, unless the interior of the wall niche is a bold color, such as black or navy blue. The items stand out if the colors contrast with the niche's color.

    Creating Cohesive Design

    • A tall and narrow niche can be used to create cohesion in your room. For instance, if you have a bright red carpet and yellow couch pillows, use decorative items on your niche such as figurines, candle holders or vases that are red and yellow to combine the main colors in the room.
