How to Make a Pushcart

Pushcarts are a handy way to move numerous objects without the need to carry heavier items or make multiple trips. The carts are made to whatever size is needed, with a set of shelves or a single box, depending on how big or small the cart should be. Making a pushcart also requires minimal woodworking skill and only a few tools, which makes it an easy project. A simple pushcart consists of a wooden box frame mounted on a set of wheels.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a simple box frame using two 3-foot by 1-foot and two 2-foot by 1-foot boards. Make sure that opposite sides of the box are of the same size so the frame is even. Attach the pieces together using screws or nails at the corners. If using screws, drill a small guide hole before driving in the screw. Place the nails or screws at least 3 inches apart from each other. The box may be as big or as small as needed for the cart, although too big a box will make the cart heavy and difficult to maneuver.

    • 2

Attach the 3-foot by 2-foot board to one side of the box so that it creates a bottom or wall, like the back of a bookshelf. Drive screws or nails, or staples if the board is made of a thin material like plywood, all around the frame. Again, leave about 3 inches between nails or screws, but staples should be about 1 inch apart.

    • 3

Place the last 2-foot by 1-foot board inside the box as a shelf. This piece should be perpendicular to the 3-foot by 2-foot board. Stand the box upright and make sure the board is even by using the level. The board can be placed in the center of the box or higher or lower depending on whether one shelf maybe need to be bigger than the other. Since bigger objects tend to be heavier, raising the board up from the center would be better for accommodating larger objects than leaving them higher up. Screw or nail the board into place through the two sides and back.

Smooth down every surface of the box with sandpaper.

    • 5

Secure one caster wheel to each corner at the bottom of the box. This leaves the cart with two interior shelves and a top to hold objects as they are moved. The casters come with the parts and instructions to properly attach them.

    • 6

Attach a metal pushcart handle, if wanted, to one upper corner of the box. The handle also comes with the parts and instructions for installation.
