How to Make an Under Bed Storage for Books

Extra storage is at a premium in apartments and small homes where space is limited. If done correctly, under-the-bed storage can keep your books or other belongings orderly while providing easy access, preventing clutter on furniture and counter tops. For children, under-the-bed storage also provides the extra bonus of eliminating the space once occupied by "monsters."

Instructions

    • 1

Use your tape measure to record the space between the bottom of your bed frame and the floor.

    • 2

Measure the height of your old dresser drawers to ensure they will fit in the space beneath your bed. Don't forget to factor in enough space for your casters.

    • 3

Turn one of your drawers over so the bottom faces up. Place one of your small swivel casters at the corner of your drawer frame and mark two or three screws holes with your pencil. Use your drill to make pilot holes at each of the marks. Repeat the process on the remaining three corners of the drawer. If there is not enough space at the drawer frame corners to mount your casters, consider using side-mount casters fastened to the drawer frame walls instead.

Use your screwdriver and 3/4 inch screws to fasten one caster to each corner of the drawer frame. Turn the drawer right side up and roll it into place beneath the bed. Load the storage bin with books or other items and use the drawer handle to pull it in and out of its place under the bed.

Build enough storage drawers to fit on both sides of the bed to maximize capacity and convenience.
