Lay the four 6-foot boards on the working surface parallel to each other and pressed close together. Lay the four 1-foot boards perpendicularly across the boards and space them evenly over the length of the 6 foot boards. Drill four holes for the wood screws in each 1-foot board, so that there is one hole between it and each 6-foot board. Secure all the boards together tightly using the wood screws, tightening each screw partway before installing all screws.
Find the placement of the studs within the installation wall by means of the stud finder. Mark clearly all of the studs and note the measurements between the centers of the various studs to which the shelf bench will be installed.
Set the brackets evenly on the shelf, keeping them the same distance apart as the studs on the wall where they will be attached. Space them evenly between the 1-foot bracing boards if possible. Drill holes through the brackets and into the bench board, and attach the brackets to the bench by placing wood screws in these preformed holes.
Flip the bench right side up and maneuver the finished bench to the section of the wall to which it will be installed. Have an assistant hold the bench in place and quickly mark the location of the bracket screw holes. Remove the bench and drill holes for the brackets in the wall, then return the bench to its position and attach it to the wall with long wood screws.
