How to Paint a Pleather Trunk

Pleather is a term for a fake, plastic leather that is utilized in fashion and home decor. The material is nonporous and has a shiny texture. The nonporous texture makes for stuffy fashion statements but can be utilized for furniture, such as trunks. Acrylic and water-based paints will not adhere to pleather, so a specially-produced vinyl paint should be used when its time to spruce up a pleather trunk.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the pleather trunk using a clean cloth, mild detergent and some warm water. Remove any and all debris from the surface of the pleather. Dry thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth.

    • 2

Place the pleather trunk in a well-ventilated area over an even layer of newspapers. The newspapers will prevent the spray dye from adhering sticking to other surfaces.

    • 3

Keep the trunk closed and spray an even layer of vinyl spray dye over the entire exterior of the trunk. Keep the can about 6 away from the trunk when spraying. Allow the trunk to dry for a few hours. Apply a second coat of vinyl dye to the pleather exterior and allow it to dry for another couple hours. If you would like to paint a small area of the trunk, use home decor stencils to create your own design. Place the stencil on the desired area of the trunk and spray over it with two or three even passes. Peel away the stencil and allow the dye to dry completely. Repeat as many times as desired.

Paint the interior of the trunk. For trunks with a pleather interior as well, spray the interior last and allow the paint to dry completely. Apply a second coat and leave the paint overnight with the trunk lid open to ventilate.
