How to Buff Out Oiled Furniture

One of the most common ways to finish wooden furniture, aside from using stains and varnishes, is to apply liberal amounts of oil, such as linseed oil or tung oil. The oil is usually applied in several coats with a cloth and buffed to a lustrous shine. With normal wear and tear, oil finishes can become dirty or dull. If your oil-finished wood furniture lost its luster, they you may return its shine by cleaning and buffing it with common household ingredients.

  • Boiled linseed oil

Wipe excess dust from the oiled furniture with a clean, dry, soft cloth.

    • 2

Mix a solution of 1 gallon of hot water, 2 tbsp. of turpentine and 4 tbsp. of boiled linseed oil.

Apply a small amount of lemon oil or orange oil to a microfiber polishing cloth to use as furniture polish. Alternatively, make your own furniture polish from equal parts olive oil and lemon juice and apply a small amount of it to a microfiber polishing cloth. You also may use the oil that was applied to finish the furniture, typically linseed oil or tung oil, as a polish.
