How to Build a House Window Seat for a Dog

Dogs may become bored and lonely when left alone during the day -- unlike humans, they get little enjoyment from books and television. A window seat gives dogs access to entertaining sights such as neighbors, other pets and wildlife, and maybe even intriguing smells wafting in through the window screen. If your dog is more in a napping mood, a window seat will provide a comfortable, sunny, breezy resting spot. You can make a quick window seat with common supplies from fabric and hardware stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Handsaw
  • 2 shelf holders
  • Stud finder
  • Drill

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your dog in the reclining position and add 4 inches. For a full window seat, measure the length of the entire windowsill instead.

    • 2

Measure the width of your dog from shoulder to shoulder and add 4 inches.

    • 3

Cut a piece of plywood to the length and width you determined in Steps 1 and 2, using a handsaw.

    • 4

Place the wood board flat on the top of the windowsill. Using your stud finder, locate two studs inside the wall under the windowsill. You will be screwing the shelf holders (L brackets) into these studs to ensure the window seat’s stability. If you have a concrete, brick or stone wall, you can screw the shelf holders into any point on the wall, using masonry screws instead of wood screws.

    • 5

Place the shelf holders against the wood studs and mark their placement on the wall and the wood board.

    • 6

Drill starter holes through the wood board where your shelf holders will go. Drill starter holes in the shelf holders that line up with these holes. The drill bit you use will have a smaller diameter than the screws you will.

    • 7

Screw the wood board to the shelf holders.

    • 8

Cut a piece of polyurethane foam equal to the length and width of the wood board. The foam will cushion the window seat.

    • 9

Glue the foam to the wood board, using wood glue.

    • 10

Cut a piece of carpet 4 inches longer than the wood board on all sides.

    • 11

Stretch the carpet over the top of the wood board and foam pad. Bring the edges of the carpet over the edges of the wood board and staple them to the bottom, using a staple gun and staples at 1-inch intervals. Staple the carpet to the back edge of the wood board instead of the bottom.

    • 12

Place the window seat on the windowsill so that the shelf holders are aligned over the beams. Drill holes through the shelf holders into the wood and screw the window seat in place.
