Upholstery Sewing Types

Upholstery is the craft of making soft seating using frames, springs, cushions and fabric. It dates back hundreds of years. Since then, techniques have progressed from stuffing cushions with horse hair to the specialized foam cushions used today. Types of upholstery have also grown beyond furniture to include cars, boats and airplanes.
  1. Furniture

    • Furniture upholstery, such as chairs, sofas and ottomans, begins with a sturdy frame and a spring system to support the seat. Upholsterers then add cushions and padding, usually made of high-density foam. To finish, they cover the piece with upholstery fabric, such as leather, cotton or wool.

    Car

    • Auto upholsters create custom seats, carpets, door panels and roof liners for all types of cars. They typically use leather, vinyl and cloth fabrics. Some focus on recreating the interiors of classic cars using the same materials found in the original. They also refurbish convertible and vinyl roofs.

    Marine

    • Marine upholstery must withstand exposure to water, sun and wind. It can include custom seat coverings, pillows, carpets, plastic windows and covers. Marine upholsterers work with open-cell foam, which encourages water to quickly evaporate. They also use UV-treated thread with high-strength and controlled stretch to remain stable in sunlight and salt water.

    Aircraft

    • Aircraft upholsters supply planes with seat covers and cushions, carpet, side panels and headliner replacement. They also paint seat frames and window plastics, replace plastic trim and provide soundproofing. Aircraft upholsters must use materials that meet FAA and JAA requirements for low smoke and toxicity.
