DIY Pipe Shelf

PVC pipe is used in a variety of plumbing applications, but it can also be used to create unusual and stylish furniture. A set of shelves built out of PVC pipe is sure to be a conversation-starter, and is light enough to be moved around easily if needed. These shelves are nothing more than four rectangles that are held apart with upright pipes, meaning that the only tools you will need are a saw and some glue.

Instructions

    • 1

Clamp 1 1/2-inch PVC pipe in a vise and cut the following pieces with a hacksaw: eight 48-inch pieces, eight 12-inch pieces and sixteen 18-inch pieces.

    • 2

Sand both ends of each piece with 80-grit sandpaper to prepare them for glue.

    • 3

Apply PVC glue into four 1 1/2-inch side outlet 90 joints, then assemble a rectangle by inserting two 48-inch pieces and two 12-inch pieces into the joints. The third flange on each joint should face up, completing the bottom shelf.

    • 4

Apply PVC glue into the third flange of each joint and insert four 18-inch pieces.

    • 5

Assemble another rectangle with two 48-inch pieces, two 12-inch pieces and four 1 1/2-inch 4-way joints. Glue all of the pieces together.

    • 6

Glue the lower flanges of the 4-way joints to the tops of the 18-inch pipes extending up from the base. This completes the second shelf.

    • 7

Glue four 18-inch pipes into the upper flange of the 4-way joints, then build a third shelf the same way that you did the second. Glue the third shelf to the 18-inch pipes extending up from the second, and glue the final four 18-inch pipes into the upper flanges.

    • 8

Build the top shelf the same way that you did the bottom and glue it onto the uprights.

    • 9

Cut four pieces of 1/2-inch-thick plywood that measure 52-by-11-1/2 inches. Paint or stain them if you want, and let them dry thoroughly.

    • 10

Slide the boards onto the four shelf forms from the side.

    • 11

Lift up each board and glue it in place with a bead of construction adhesive along the top of each side pipe. Allow the adhesive to dry for the time recommended on the container before putting weight on the shelves.
