How to Keep Antique Furniture From Drying Out

Preserving the look and feel of antiques has two key steps: giving them the right care and controlling the environment. If you take the right steps to preserve your furniture, not only will you be able to enjoy it for years to come, you'll be able to resell it at value if necessary. Even the wrong environment for a day or two can damage furniture, so make the commitment to keeping it in good shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Place antique furniture away from direct sunlight, which dries it out and can fade color. With light-colored wooden furniture, you'll notice a color change in just a few days. If you have direct sun exposure, use curtains to block the light from hitting the antique. Also, make sure the piece isn't placed next to a direct air source, such as an air vent, or a direct heating element, such as a radiator.

Control the air quality in the room. Wooden antique furniture dislikes both too dry and too moist environments. During humid periods, use a dehumidifier to control room moisture. During cool months, increase the air's water content with a humidifier.

Dust furniture regularly with a soft cloth to remove dust and grime buildup.

Polish the piece with a silicone-free paste wax or oil polish one to two times a year. This soaks into the furniture to keep it glossy, while also counteracting dryness. If you use a silicone-based product, you're more likely to see fingerprint residue and to experience problems if you need to refinish the piece.
