How to Make Crafts Out of Rocks & Shelves

Rocks and shelves don’t naturally go together. The rock is a product of nature and comes in differing colors, textures and forms. Shelves are a man-made product that may be derived from natural wood or fabricated from plastic. However those with crafting abilities take different items that don’t normally go together and create interesting usable crafts. Rocks and shelves can be put together in various ways, focusing on either the whimsical or the practical.

Instructions

  1. Bookshelf

    • 1

Make a bookshelf. The higher the book shelf, the more unstable it will become if the foundations are not solid. Start with flat finished shelf boards of the width that best fits the location for the finished bookshelf. Place where it will not be easily or regularly bumped. Use large, flat rocks for the base of the bookshelf and to separate one shelf from another.

    • 2

Lay out a row of rocks of similar size. Lay a shelf board over these rocks. One third from each end of this board, add flat, but tall rocks. You may need to use more than one rock piled on each side to gain the height needed to shelve your books.

    • 3

Drill into each rock, adding metal rods to hold them in place and together. Add the next shelf board. Keep this bookshelf to a total of four shelves and add your books.

    Coffee Table

    • 4

Put together a coffee table. Coffee tables are low to the ground. To create one with rocks and shelf boards, select where you wish the coffee table to go because this is not an easily movable item. Pick out four solid, large, rocks with flat surfaces. Select rocks with interesting colors or textures. Lay these on the floor to anchor the four corners of the coffee table.

    • 5

Create a square by fastening four finished shelf boards together with nails and metal brackets to keep them in place and secure. Lay the shelf square on the rock base. Add a top of clear Plexiglas to cover the shelf board square.

    Garden Bench

    • 6

Make a garden bench. Sometimes you may wish to sit in the yard or garden and relax. Use natural rocks and unfinished shelf boards in their natural wood to make a bench on which to enjoy the warm weather.

    • 7

Build up a base of flat rocks using poured concrete to keep them in place and secure. Once the base is dried and ready, add shelf boards, weighing them down on either end with heavy, but colorful rocks with interesting shapes.

    Toy See-Saw

    • 8

Make a toy see-saw. While rocks and shelf boards aren’t going to make a see-saw sturdy enough for your children to play on, you can create a miniature, whimsical see-saw for your yard or garden. Select a large, wide rock with a flat surface.

    • 9

Turn over a finished 3-foot shelf board. Five inches each way from the center point outward, nail on two pieces of wood the width of the shelf and at least 5 inches deep. The wood pieces should, when turned over on the rock base, fit on either side to keep the shelf see-saw from slipping off the rock. Add plastic or ceramic animals to each side of the sea-saw.
