DIY Cabinets for a Sewing Room

Crafters and sewing hobbyists alike are often afflicted with a strange disorder -- a compulsion creeps in, making it impossible to pass up just one more piece of yardage, one more length of lace or one more set of buttons. Before long, standard cabinets don’t provide the right nooks for such a vast collection. Custom cabinetry is expensive when you hire a carpenter, but you can create your own sewing room cabinets from a re-purposed bookcase and upcycled drawers rescued from a chest and save the extra cash for more patterns, notions or materials.

Instructions

  1. Fabric Wardrobe

    • 1

Clean the bookcase and shutters with a damp sponge and warm, sudsy water.

    • 2

Sand the surfaces of the wooden pieces to create a rough surface for the paint.

    • 3

Prime the pieces with the primer sealer or with white paint. This makes it easier to paint with colored paint, as you will generally need fewer coats.

    • 4

Paint the bookcase and shutters with the lightest of the colors you’ve selected. Allow the paint to dry and add a second coat, as needed.

    • 5

Add stripes with masking tape, pressing it firmly to the surface on the sides of the bookcase.

    • 6

Paint the second color onto the bookcase and on alternating louvers on the shutters. When the paint is dry, add a second coat if it is needed. Remove the tape when the paint is dry.

    • 7

Repeat the tape-and-paint techniques to add other colors to the case and shutters.

    • 8

Trim the vinyl tiles to match the length and width of the bookcase shelves, if you choose to line the interior of your cabinet.

    • 9

Attach the tiles to the shelves with double-sided carpet tape.

    • 10

Join two shutter panels with the two-way hinges, using the manufacturer’s package directions. Repeat with the other two panels.

    • 11

Attach the shutter doors to the bookcase with the regular hinges according to the package directions.

    • 12

Glue or screw doorknobs, drawer pulls or other handles to the shutters.

    Notions Nook

    • 13

Remove any hardware from the drawers.

    • 14

Fill the holes with wood putty and allow to dry before sanding the filler flush with the surface.

    • 15

Clean the surfaces with a damp sponge and warm, sudsy water.

    • 16

Sand the surfaces to roughen them enough to receive paint.

    • 17

Prime and paint the drawers to coordinate with your fabric wardrobe or other room decor.

    • 18

Place the backs of two drawers together. Apply carpenter’s glue to the exterior side of the backs and join them. Add a few finishing nails with the nail gun to secure the connection.

    • 19

Join the second pair of drawers in the same way.

    • 20

Set your new shelves on top of the fabric wardrobe. Alternatively, mount them to the wall by screwing them into the wall studs.

    • 21

Place buttons, snaps, seam binding and other notions in wicker baskets. Slide the baskets onto the shelves.
