How to Make a White Coat Rack Look Antique

Antiquing furniture can give a plain piece a charm it did not formerly possess. A white coat rack can accent a hallway when given an antique finish. There are a variety of methods that can be used to give furniture the appearance of an antigue. Many of these require layers of stains and varnishes applied as washes or sparingly with a brush. The easiest way to make white furniture look antique is with a crackle glaze.

Instructions

    • 1

Lightly sand your coat rack so the new layers of paint will stick. Wipe the rack down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt.

    • 2

Paint a base coat. If the white paint on the coat rack is in good condition and you wish the item to remain white, you can skip this step. Crackle finish requires two coats of paint. They can be the same color, or different colors that contrast or complement each other. When the top layer crackles, the bottom layer will show through the cracks.

    • 3

Paint a layer of crackle medium over the dry base coat. Be generous with the crackle medium, but apply an even coat. Let the layer dry for about an hour.

Paint your top coat. If you want thin cracks, paint a thin layer of top coat. The thicker you paint your top coat, the heavier the cracks will be. Apply the paint quickly and do not go over the same spot for very long. The crackle medium begins working minutes after the paint is applied and the paint brush can mess them up once they have started forming.
