How to Redo Old Laminate Furniture

Laminate is a fairly durable material, often patterned in an attempt to resemble real wood, which is sometimes used to create furniture. One benefit of purchasing laminate furniture is that it is much less expensive than hardwood furniture, especially when comparing large pieces such as bureaus and entertainment centers. One drawback, however, is that laminate is frequently not the most attractive material, especially as it ages. Use a special technique to paint over old laminate furniture to make it look nearly new again.

  • Quick-drying wood filler
  • Putty knife
  • Fine-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any drawers or doors from your laminate piece, as well as any metal hardware. Fill holes or divots with quick-drying wood filler. Smooth the surface with a putty knife, and scrape away any excess with the knife edge. Allow the filler to dry completely.

Sand the laminate evenly all over with fine-grit sandpaper to remove the smooth finish and sheen. Wipe away all the sanding residue with a rag. Cover all the laminate with one moderate layer of spray-on primer made especially for this type of material.

Wait two to three hours and paint the laminate with latex water-based interior paint. Apply the first layer of paint with a paint roller and the second layer with a wide paintbrush. Let the paint dry 48 hours, and reassemble your refreshed laminate furniture piece.
