How to Repurpose Bifold Closet Doors

Bi-fold closet doors are often installed in spaces without room for a swinging door. The hinges and track tend to wear out before the panels do, and the mechanism is often difficult to operate. If you're thinking of changing out the bi-fold doors on your closet, don't be too quick to throw out the panels. You can re-purpose the panels into storage, furniture or decorative items, filling a need with little expense and adding a unique item to your home.

Instructions

Assemble a room divider. Paint three bi-fold closet door panels and connect them together with 2-way hinges. Place them between sections of a large room or in a corner to create a private dressing area.

    • 2

Create a hanging headboard. Paint two or three panels and connect them with hinges. Hammer decorative upholstery tacks to the perimeter. Install sliding mounting brackets along the back of the top panel and the wall above the bed. Slide the brackets together to mount the headboard.

Solve storage problems. Cut the panels in two, paint them and mount them vertically on a wall. Use the slats to hold mail, holiday cards, keys and reminders. Cover half a solid panel with chalkboard paint and half with cork board and hang it by a door or in the office. Pry every other slat from a panel, lean the panel against a wall and hang magazines on it for easy access.
