How to Move a Church Organ

Church organs weigh upwards of 350 pounds, so moving one is no easy feat. Not only are these instruments heavy, but they have many delicate parts, and must be handled with care. If you are unable to hire professional movers to move your organ, or feel it is unwarranted due to the short distance that you plan on moving it, there are some steps you can take to ensure that you move the organ safely without doing any damage to it or injuring yourself.

  • Large quilted moving blanket
  • 2 friends
  • 2 furniture dollies

Instructions

      Fold down the music stand and place the cover on the keys. Remove any loose pieces, wrapping them in bubble wrap and placing them gently in a box.

      Wrap the organ in a heavy quilted moving blanket.

      With the help of a friend, lift one end of the organ and have another friend slide the furniture dolly underneath.

      With one friend holding the end on the furniture dolly steady, work with the other friend to lift the opposite end and slide the second dolly underneath.

      Roll the organ to its new location.
