How to Make a Star Fish Coat Hook

The glory of coat hooks is that you can customize them to match any theme you can imagine. You can put up a single coat hook or make a rack that will hold several coats at the same time. You can even make a portable pole coat rack that can be moved from room to room as your needs — or seasons — change.

  • Spray adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your decorative paper to a rectangle measuring 3 1/2 by 1 1/2 feet. Lay it out facedown on a flat table.

    • 2

Spray adhesive onto the entire front of the board. Center it over the decorative paper, sticky side down, then gently press it onto the paper. Turn it over and press out any bubbles or wrinkling in the paper before finally pressing the paper firmly to the wood.

    • 3

Turn the assembly over so that the wood side is up. Spray adhesive on the sides and back of the wood, then fold the paper around the wood as if you were wrapping a package.

    • 4

Turn the assembly to the front and spray sealant over the paper. Allow the sealant to dry before you continue.

    • 5

Space out where you want to place your hooks on the front of the board. Use the ruler to make sure they are spaced evenly and symmetrically. Most coat hooks possess two or more screw holes. Lay the hooks on the board and use the pencil to draw dots where you will drill primer holes. Then set the hooks aside.

    • 6

Take the starfish and glue them with epoxy glue to spots on the board, taking care to make sure they will not impede later installation of the coat hooks. Allow the glue to dry before you continue.

    • 7

Drill shallow primer holes where you marked the dots. Put the coat hooks in place, then use the screws and screwdriver to secure them to the board.

    • 8

Measure and mark a spot 3/4 inch on a diagonal from each corner of the board. Drill a small hole completely through the board at each of these spots. Use nails or long screws to secure your coat rack to the wall through these holes.
